The Los Angeles Sparks have landed the No. 2 pick in the 2024 WNBA Draft..This is the first time the Spark have earned the second pick in franchise history. The league announced the pick today during the WNBA Draft Lottery on ESPN. The Sparks will have two first-round picks in the 2024 draft, including number two as well as No. 12, acquired last offseason in a trade with the Las Vegas Aces.
“We’re ecstatic to land the No. 2 pick in this draft and have the opportunity to add a dynamic player to our organization,” LA Sparks Chief Administrative Officer and General Manager Karen Bryant said. “Our basketball staff is already hard at work evaluating and preparing for what will be a very special draft day, with two first-round picks. Today marks a huge step for our franchise as we continue to build the LA Sparks back towards contention.”
Since the draft lottery was instituted in 2002, the Los Angeles Sparks have picked twice in the draft lottery, including selecting Candace Parker first overall in 2008 and Nneka Ogwumike first overall in 2012. In the first season following both top picks, the Sparks made it to the conference finals and both players won the Rookie of the Year award.
In year one under the leadership of Karen Bryant and Head Coach Curt Miller, the Sparks led the WNBA in steals per game, and ranked fourth in the league in Defensive Rating. Los Angeles won six straight games and were the only team to beat the Las Vegas Aces on the road in the regular season. LA’s Jordin Canada was named to the WNBA All-Defensive First Team and Nneka Ogwumike was named to the All-WNBA Second Team, All-Defensive Second Team, and earned her eighth WNBA All-Star selection.
