Storm Star Jewell Loyd Named WNBA Western Conference Player of the Week

Loyd earns honor for second time in her career after averaging 24.3 ppg in three games last week

Seattle Storm guard Jewell Loyd has been named the WNBA Western Conference Player of the Week the league announced on Tuesday. In three games this past week, Loyd averaged 24.3 points, 3.7 assists and 3.3 rebounds per game as the Storm went 2-1 during its trio of road games.

Loyd scored 73 points over three games including a career-high 39 points in a 109-103 win at Dallas on Saturday. She started the game with 25 points in the first half, but was held scoreless in the third after the Wings switched up their defense. Loyd then put the game out of reach with a big run in the fourth quarter, scoring 14 points over the final 3:36 of the game to give her 39 overall. The total was the most in a regulation game in Storm history and the most in a Storm win.

Her final stat line was impressive with those 39 points coming on 12-of-21 shooting with seven three-pointers, five rebounds, and five assists. She is the only player in WNBA history to record 35+ points, 7+ 3-pointers, 5+ rebounds, and 5+ assists in a game, and has now done it twice this season.

In Seattle’s other two games, Loyd scored 17 points in each as the Storm beat Phoenix on Tuesday before falling at Las Vegas on Saturday.

Loyd has been red-hot to open the 2023 season, leading the WNBA in scoring with 25.4 points per game. She has scored in double-figures in each game this year including six with 20+ points and three eclipsing 30. Her 229 total points through her first nine games this season are the most through nine games in franchise history and 3rd most in WNBA history.

This is the second time Loyd has earned player of the week honors after receiving the award in June 2021.
