Sixers Acquire Jalen McDaniels From Charlotte in 4-Team Trade

Philadelphia 76ers President of Basketball Operations Daryl Morey announced today that the team has acquired Jalen McDaniels and two second-round draft picks in a four-team trade involving the Charlotte Hornets, New York Knicks and Portland Trail Blazers.

In his fourth NBA season, McDaniels holds career-high averages across the board at 10.6 points, 4.8 rebounds, 2.0 assists and 1.2 steals per game in 26.7 minutes of action. He has posted five multi-block games this season and has nine games with three-or-more steals.

Within his 56 appearances (21 starts) this season, the Washington state native has posted four 20-plus point games, including a career-high 26-point performance against Boston on Jan. 16. Fifteen of McDaniels’ 26 points came from beyond the arc, as he connected on a career-best five three-pointers. This season, he is averaging a career-best 1.2 made threes per game.

For his career, McDaniels has appeared in 174 games (41 starts) all with Charlotte and holds career averages of 7.9 points, 3.9 rebounds and 1.4 assists in 20.7 minutes.

McDaniels was originally selected with the No. 52 pick in the 2019 NBA Draft, out of San Diego State, where he was named to the All-Mountain West Conference Tournament First Team and the All-MWC Second Team as a sophomore.

To complete the trade, Philadelphia dealt Matisse Thybulle to Portland and a 2023 second-round pick (most favorable of Atlanta, Brooklyn or Charlotte) to Charlotte. Portland traded its 2029 second-round selection to Philadelphia, a 2027 second-round pick (more favorable of New Orleans or Portland) to Charlotte, and Josh Hart and the draft rights to Bojan Dublijevic and Daniel Diez to New York. In addition to McDaniels, the Hornets traded New York’s 2024 second-round pick to the 76ers.

New York sent Cam Reddish, Ryan Arcidiacono, a 2023 protected (Nos. 1-14) first-round pick (which converts to four second-round picks if not conveyed in 2023) and the draft rights to Ante Tomic to Portland, as well as Svi Mykhailiuk to Charlotte.

Thybulle, who is in his fourth NBA season, was selected by Boston with the No. 20 overall pick in the 2019 NBA Draft before Philadelphia acquired his rights in a trade. For his career, Thybulle has appeared in 245 games (78 starts), tallying 4.4 points, 1.8 rebounds and 1.5 steals in 19.8 minutes per game. During his tenure with the 76ers, Thybulle earned two NBA All-Defensive Second Team selections.
