Lions Trade Matthew Stafford To The Rams For Jared Goff & Draft Picks

Things just got very very interesting in the NFL.

The Detroit Lions have agreed to trade quarterback Matthew Stafford to the Los Angeles Rams in exchange for quarterback Jared Goff and draft picks. The Lions will receive Los Angeles’ third round pick in 2021 and Rams first round pick in 2022 and 2023.

According to Yahoo Sports,

Stafford will leave the Lions as their all-time leader in passing yards (45,109) and touchdowns (282), and will now join a Rams team that seemed a good quarterback away from being a true contender this year. There were more than a half-dozen teams interested in Stafford, per NFL Network’s Ian Rapoport, but the Rams apparently had the best offer.

Stafford is under contract for the next two seasons, with salary-cap hits of $20 million in 2021 and $23 million in 2022.

With Stafford gone, the Lions are set to enter full rebuild mode under new head coach Dan Campbell and general manager Brad Holmes, with three extra draft picks and $14 million in new cap space. The team already holds the No. 7 overall pick in the 2021 NFL draft, and this move could give it the ammunition to move up in the draft if it covets quarterback prospects like Ohio State’s Justin Fields and BYU’s Zach Wilson.

Let’s see if Matt Stafford can lead the Rams back to the Super Bowl.
