Tale of the Tape: #1 Georgia vs Florida

We are in Week 9 of the CFB season, one week before the official College Football Playoff rankings come out. I chose to breakdown the 2021 Georgia-Florida game. Usually this is the game that decides who come out of the SEC east and play in Atlanta. This year due to UF underachieving, this is nothing more than a chance for Florida to throw a speed bump in UGA’s season. The World’s Largest Cocktail Party has a chance to be a closer matchup than most may think.

In this preview we’re going to take a look at keys to success for each team and give you my prediction at the end.

Keys for Georgia’s Pursuit of Perfection

Be who we think you are! Georgia has been dominant on defense this year at a historic pace. They’re only giving up 6.6 points per game while being the number 2 pass and run defense in terms of yardage. They are the only team in the country that is ranked in the top 5 in both categories.

The UGA offense is a bit of a different story though. We knew they would be a little behind in the passing game due to starting the season without their top 4 talented pass catchers. Now with Jermaine Burton and Darnell Washington back in the fold things have opened up.

This week Coach Kirby Smart said that QBs JT Daniels and Stetson Bennett are going to split time as signal caller after Daniels missed the past 3 games since the September 25th matchup against Vanderbilt.

Bennett has played very good complimentary football while passing for 553 yards and completing 67.3% of his passes.

Against Florida I think that UGA will be able to pick the score if I’m being honest. Florida is averaging 3.24 yards per carry while Georgia is only giving up 62 yards per game on the ground. If UF tries to be one dimensional in this game it won’t be much of a game at all for long.

Keys for a Florida Upset

First things first…. settle on a QB and stick with him. Now if it was me and I had nothing to lose like Florida, I’d start Anthony Richardson. While Emery Jones knows the offense and is more of the sure handed QB, Richardson gives you a dynamic skillset that you lack with Jones.

The kid they affectionately call “AR15” is the team’s second leading rusher and is averaging 10.6 yards per pass. You’re going to need that kind of production and a little luck to stick with this Georgia team.

Also another thing, don’t try to play with UGA in a phone booth like Arkansas tried to do. Most of your offense needs to come in the spread and attack their secondary. If you plan on finding any weakness to this defense, that is where it will be. Give up pulling your guards because they don’t move well enough to get the angle on these Bulldog linemen.

Now on defense for Florida you have to hope you can force a couple of turnovers. UGA plans to play both of their QBs in this game and you have to hope that either the gun slinger mentality of Stetson Bennet, or the rust of JT Daniels being on the sideline for nearly a month, can work in your favor.

Georgia likes to run the ball early and often and tire you out so that later in the game your defense is tired of seeing these 3 talented backs coming at them in multiple ways. You have to keep them off schedule and put them in obvious passing situations and GET OFF THE FIELD.

Dan Mullen is going to have to call the best game of his coaching career and maybe, JUST MAYBE, Florida will be able to pull this off.

Prediction

Georgia 37 Florida 19
