On Friday December 16th, ESSENCE hosted the ‘ESSENCE Black Women in Sports Awards Brunch’ as part of the Celebration Bowl at the Westside Cultural Arts Center in Atlanta.

Hosted by ESPN anchor Elle Duncan, the ESSENCE Black Women in Sports Awards Brunch was in partnership with Coca-Cola to spotlight and honor leading women in the sports industry, both professional and collegiate.

During the event, Sanya Richards-Ross (former Jamaican-American track & field athlete who’s a two-time Olympic champion and two-time Olympic medalist), Sonja Stills (the first female commissioner in the Mid-Eastern Athletic Conference and the first female commissioner of a Division I HBCU Conference) and the Delaware State University Lacrosse Team (who overcame adversity as a result of the aftermath due to their recent unjust traffic stop in Georgia) were all honored.

Following the award ceremonies, TUT’s Terrell Thomas caught up with WNBA living legend Angel McCoughtry to discuss the importance of the ‘ESSENCE Black Women in Sports Awards Brunch’ and more.

Angel McCoughtry spoke with Terrell Thomas about her upcoming series with FUSE “Like A Girl”, her Team USA teammate Brittney Griner’s return to the United States, her thoughts on the current 2022-23 NBA season and her plans for the year 2023.
