2x WNBA Champion and former University of Washington standout comes home
The Seattle Storm announced today the signing of free agent guard Sami Whitcomb. Per team policy, terms of the deal were not disclosed.
“Sami personifies the passion and excitement that is Storm basketball,” said Talisa Rhea, Storm General Manager. “She is a threat from anywhere on the court, and her experience and leadership will play an important role as we look forward. We are thrilled to welcome Sami and her family back to Seattle.”
Whitcomb makes her return to the Storm after beginning her WNBA career with Seattle in 2017 and winning championships with the team in 2018 and 2020. She was traded to the New York Liberty prior to the start of the 2021 season, playing two seasons in New York. Whitcomb, a standout player at the University of Washington from 2007-10, originally signed with the Storm as a free agent after earning a pair of MVP honors and team championships with the Rockingham Flames of the Australian State Basketball League in 2015 and 2016.
“I’m so excited to be coming home—that’s what Seattle and the Storm are for me,” said Whitcomb. “I feel like I’ve grown a lot since I’ve been away and I’m excited to be back, as hungry as ever, and to be part of this new chapter. This feels like the perfect reunion and I’m very grateful to be coming back to Seattle with Kate AND this time Nash.”
Whitcomb, a career 36.7% three-point shooter, has averaged 6.7 points, 1.8 assists, 0.8 steals and 2.3 rebounds per game over six seasons in the league. She has made 154 three-pointers in 115 games in four years with Seattle, ranking sixth on the Storm’s all-time list, and fifth with a 35.1% three-point percentage.
“Sami is a strong leader and relentless competitor, and I am excited to have her back in Seattle,” said Storm Head Coach Noelle Quinn. “She made her initial mark in this league as a three-point specialist but has worked extremely hard to expand her game. Sami was one of the hardest workers the two seasons we played together in Seattle, and she has continued to display the same work ethic throughout her career.”
Whitcomb had a banner season in 2021, averaging 11.7 points per game and finishing second in the WNBA in three-pointers made (76) and three-point percentage (42.5%). She scored at least 26 points three times during the season including 26 on 8-of-15 shooting and 5-of-9 from three-point range against Seattle on Aug. 22, adding eight assists and five rebounds.
Whitcomb was a four-year letterwinner at UW, finishing her career ranked 15th in program history with 1,205 points, and fourth in made three-pointers with 176. She averaged 10.6 ppg over her UW career, shooting 38.9% from the field and 33.3% from beyond the arc. As a senior, Whitcomb earned All-Pac-10 honors, averaging 13.0 points per game.
