The Los Angeles Sparks hosted a press conference on May 19 at 3:00 p.m. PT for four-time WNBA Champion Seimone Augustus who announced her retirement as a player and the continuation of her WNBA career as an LA Sparks assistant coach.
Drafted No. 1 overall in the 2006 WNBA Draft by the Minnesota Lynx, Augustus retires as one of the most prolific basketball players of all time. Her accolades include winning four championships (2011, 2013, 2015, 2017), eight All-Star appearances (2006, 2007, 2001, 2013-2015, 2017, 2018), and making six-All-WNBA teams. Augustus is also a three-time Olympic Gold Medalist with USA Basketball (2008, 2012, 2016).
Augustus retires from the WNBA 10th in scoring in league history with 6,005 points, averaging 15.4 points per game throughout her career. Her career 48% field goal percentage is the seventh best in WNBA history. She finishes with career averages of 3.1 rebounds and 2.3 assists per game, shooting 36.4% on 3-pointers for her career. She played in 58 playoff games, starting 56, and averaged 15.5 points on 45.2% shooting in the postseason. Augustus played collegiately at LSU where she won back-to-back Wooden and Naismith Player of the Year Awards in 2005 and 2006 while guiding her team to three consecutive Final Four appearances. She is from Baton Rouge, Louisiana.
