Diana Taurasi Is Still Clutch; Chennedy Carter Perhaps the Dopest Rookie in the Wubble as the Mercury Defeat Atlanta (81-74)

Recap Written by Shaniece Nicole Eagles

It has been 144 days since Breonna Taylor was murdered in her own apartment. The officers responsible for her death have not been arrested.

Black Senators Matter. The Atlanta Dream entered tonight’s game wearing T-shirts combatting their owner, who openly wrote a letter to the league’s commissioner Cathy Engelbert opposing the Black Lives Matter Movement. The T-shirts endorsed Raphael Warnock, who is challenging Atlanta Dream co-owner Kelly Loeffler  for her U.S. Senate seat.

Ten lead changes, both teams never leading more than nine points, and tied five times, the Atlanta Dream (2-3) and Phoenix Mercury (3-2) were evenly matched the entire night. The highest-scoring period was the 4th quarter. Phoenix outscored Atlanta 32-19, led by Taurasi’s 20-points, 13 of which came in the 4th, including a game-clinching assist to her teammate Brittney Griner, who added 18-points and 6 rebounds of her own with 49.7 seconds to go. Griner’s bucket put Phoenix up 77-70 and also forced Atlanta Dream coach Nicki Collen to call a timeout. The Mercury would close out the game at the free-throw line.

Chennedy Carter scored a season-high 26-points in tonight’s loss. Although Carter and her teammates didn’t get the win down the stretch, she was consistent throughout the game and out-dueled the newest addition to the Mercury, also superstar Skylar Diggins.

“My confidence is boosted, and it lets me know what I can really do on the court. It’s not just from playing. My teammates and coaching staff do a good job every day telling me to attack, compete, and play at a high level,” stated Carter.

The rookie has scored in double digits in all five of her games this season. She is the first Dream rookie to start her career with five straight double-digit scoring efforts. Amongst the WNBA, she ranks in the top 10 in steals, assists, free-throws made, and fantasy points. Cater is the “Truth”. Not only does Chennedy Carter have the skills to be a superstar in the W.N.BA, but she has the swagger, possessing the perfect amount of confidence, humbleness, and vocality that a coach would want their leader to have.

The Atlanta Dream play the Seattle Storm today at 3:00 pm. Their first back to back game this season
