Briana Weiss Promoted to USA Basketball Women’s National Team Director

Briana Weiss, assistant director for the USA Basketball Women’s National Team program since May 2019, has been promoted to USA Basketball Women’s National Team director after Carol Callan, who had held that role since 1995, stepped down Sept. 30.

“I very humbly step into this role knowing the standard of excellence that has been set by Carol Callan and former women’s national team program players and coaches,” said Weiss. “I greatly look forward to supporting and working with all team personnel in an effort to meet the utmost goal of fulfilling the expectations for this program.”

“Since joining USA Basketball in 2019, Briana has proven she is a valuable contributor and leader to the organization, and she has experienced first-hand the challenges and expectations that the USA Basketball women’s national team program faces,” said Jim Tooley, USA Basketball CEO. “Her experience at the BIG EAST Conference and as a division I basketball player will also serve her well in her new role, and I am excited to have Bri leading USA Basketball women’s teams in their quest for continued success.”
As the USA Women’s National Team director, Weiss will be responsible for directing and coordinating all facets of the women’s national team program, including competitions, trials and training camps, and will serve as a liaison to women’s competition committees.

Over this past summer, Weiss served as the team leader for the gold medalist U.S. Olympic Women’s Basketball Team and the USA U16 National Team, as well as coordinating efforts at USA team trials and training camps.

Since joining USA Basketball, Weiss aided with the logistics for several teams, highlighted by the 2019-20 USA National Team expanded program that posted a 17-1 record against collegiate and international opponents, and included a gold medal at the 2019 FIBA AmeriCup and a perfect 6-0 slate in FIBA Olympic qualifying contests.

Weiss came to USA Basketball from the BIG EAST Conference in New York, where she was the senior director of conference operations from 2017 until she was hired at USA Basketball.

She was a co-championship manager for the 2018 and 2019 Big East Men’s Basketball Tournament, the assistant tournament manager for the 2019 Big East Women’s Basketball Tournament, and in 2017, she served as the assistant tournament manager for the NCAA Men’s Basketball Tournament Regional at Madison Square Garden in New York. From August 2014 to August 2017, her title at the Big East was director of conference operations.

A four-year women’s basketball student-athlete at Villanova University (2005-06 to 2008-09), Weiss was a women’s basketball graduate assistant at Villanova from July 2009 to June 2010 and the director of women’s basketball operations from July 2010 to June 2013.

At Villanova, she earned a bachelor’s degree in business administration and a master’s degree in communications, and she also has a master’s degree in sports industry management from Georgetown University.
