Hawks Star Trae Young Talks Mental Health with Dr. Kensa Gunter During a Special Edition of Hawks at Home

The Hawks are shining a light on the importance of mental health by hosting a conversation between Hawks all-star guard Trae Young and Dr. Kensa Gunter during a special edition of Hawks at Home. Young is an advocate for mental health and believes in the importance of protecting your mental space, especially during difficult times.

Young and the playoff-bound Hawks have won 11 consecutive home games, which is currently the longest active streak in the NBA. Right now, Young is the NBA’s only qualifying player averaging at least 25.0 points (25.5) and 9.0 assists (9.4) per game.

Dr. Gunter, a clinical and sport psychologist based in Atlanta, provides individual counseling, mental skills and consultation services. She describes her work as being at the intersection of mental health, mental performance, culture and sport. She is committed to increasing awareness and humanizing conversations about mental and emotional wellness particularly in the world of sport and in African-American communities. Dr. Gunter currently serves as the Director of NBA Mind Health, the league’s mental health and wellness platform, and she is the President of the Association for Applied Sport Psychology.

Hawks at Home, which launched in the summer of 2020 in response to the pandemic, is an innovative online program created to educate and help youth stay active.The Hawks have empowered kids across the state of Georgia and beyond to learn basketball skills from Atlanta Hawks coaches, players, and Hawks Basketball Academy instructors, all from the comfort of their own homes. More than 20,000 area youth have participated in the program and have benefited from the access to safe, fun and free extracurricular activities.
