Philadelphia Eagles defensive coordinator Jim Schwartz has decided to take a year off and not return to the team in 2021. NFL.com’s Tom Pelissero has reported that Schwartz has informed the team and those in his immediate circle that he will let his contract expire, and is contemplating retirement after a 32 year coaching career. The decision couldn’t come at a better time, as the franchise is in need of a serious overhaul.

The Eagles defense was awful in 2020 under Schwartz. The secondary especially, was picked on relentlessly throughout the back half of the season. They ranked 20th against the pass and had a stretch of 4 games where they surrendered at least 260 yards passing. Full scale changes needed to be made to the teams roster and coaching staff. Schwartz’ stepping down should get the ball rolling.
